It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mona Huxham on the 8th March. Mona had been an enthusiast for approximately 50 years.

She began with breeding Poodles in the late 1940s in Wokingham, Berkshire, starting with Standards, she moved through Miniatures, down to Toys. Always very active within the breed clubs she was also an active member of the LKA.

By early 1950s she became fascinated with Chihuahuas and imported several from the USA and Mexico, including one of our founding stud dogs: Emmrill Son Ko’s Red Rocket.

Mona was an open show judge. together with her husband Morrell and daughter Elizabeth (both also open show judges). she bred several champions on the way, including the longcoat Chihuahua ch Emmrill Fudge, who won the Emmrill Progeny Trophy on more than one occasion.

Mona also judged internationally travelling to the Far East, Europe and the USA.

She will be remembered for her books within the “All About Series” on the Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terriers and Jack Russells, as well as her weekly columns in OUR DOGS.

As a founding member of the Jack Russell Terrier Club Mona was instrumental in getting the breeds acceptance into the Kennel Club. She spent much time and energy working on the breed club standards for the poodles as well as the chihuahua; her contributions probably still are valid today.

Latterly Mona and Morrell had kept a couple of Bichon Frise bitches and it is hoped that their grandson Hamilton will continue the Emmrill name into the future.

Mona is survived by Morrell who after almost 62 years of marriage will miss her most, but their five children and eleven grandchildren will all assist and support him.
